Retail & Leisure Case Studies

Solar Case Example

Retail and leisure facilities are notoriously high energy users with lighting on day and night due to safety regulations. Large roof spaces lend themselves perfectly to a solar installation.

Main source of high energy usage: Lighting, computers, catering equipment

Size:
75 KWp 1,350 m2 or 14,445 sq ft.
Cost of the System:
£97,500
Forecast Output:
65,250 KWh per annum
Usage on site:
100%
CO2 emissions saved:
30 tonnes per annum which is equal to 3 average UK households
Savings:
Assuming all energy is used on site, a 50% reduction on energy costs per KWh would save £111,043 over 20 years (based on 2.5% RPI)

Wind Case Example

Retail & Leisure facilities often have unutilised tracts of land that can take a small/medium size wind turbine. Planning is often relatively straight forward due to the existing nature of surrounding infrastructure and a small turbine can contribute considerably to the annual running costs of the site.

Size:
50KWp
Cost of the System:
£200,000
Forecast Output:
180,000 KWp P/A
Usage on site:
0%
CO2 emissions saved:
72 tonnes P/A equal to 7 average UK households
Savings:
£2,500 P/A increasing yearly by circa 2.5% for 20 years.

Taunton Pool - solar

Taunton Pool is a large public swimming pool and health suite including a sauna and steam room meaning the facilities have a huge electricity demand. The new Solar PV system on the roof of the pool is able to provide the building with 25% of its usage. The pool is now equipped with a 40kw Solar PV system which is generating a lot of interest from members of the public as the savings are displayed on a screen within the pool are which shows people the amount of carbon savings, energy production and energy usage.

“We have never received such great customer service from a company before now, the whole team were so friendly and got the job done within the timescales stated.”
Mr Angrave, Tone Leisure Taunton Pool

Doncaster Park and Ride - wind

Doncaster Park & Ride is located towards the east of the Great North Road and towards the northwest of Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The topography of the park and ride site is flat and the land ranges from 25m AOD to 28m AOD. This is generally reflective of the overall area although the land does gradually slope upwards from east to west.

A privately owned construction firm, built the new Park & Ride consisting of 331 parking spaces and a 40m2 facilities building and selected Spectrum for the supply and installation of a Tozzi Nord wind turbine.
The TN535 is manufactured in Italy by Tozzi Nord and is currently the highest output 10kW wind turbine available today. Thanks to its technological features, output and design, the TN535 possesses an outstanding quality profile, which lends itself perfectly to the site on the in Scawthorpe, Doncaster.
